Basketball general course, as a major course in P. E profession, plays a very important role in teaching. For studying this course, students can master basic theories on techniques and skills of basketball such as teaching ability and training ability. Accordingly, the quality of basketball general course directly affects the quality of cultivating the qualified students.Due to the historical causes, basketball teaching has been adopting the old-fashioned Russian pattern, which focuses on developing students' techniques and skills in the basketball competition. However, this pattern has not only restricted the students' abilities but also prevents teachers from reform of P. E teaching.On the basis of theories such as philosophy, pedagogy, psychology and sociology, by adopting investigation, documentation, logical analysis, mathematical statistics and referring to basketball general course in Chinese universities and colleges, this thesis makes a research on the reforming progress, the present situation, the developing tendency and the countermeasures.The results show the following:(i) The research on the basketball general course is scarce, so the proper relation between theory and practice hasn't been appropriately made nowadays.(ii) The aim of the curriculum in basketball teaching is not concrete, especially in teaching task, so the aim of curriculum cannot match with the aim of cultivating the qualified students.(iii) The choice of the teaching contents lacks the practical and effective feature, so the basic knowledge of teaching contents is neglected.(iv) Time arrangement of basketball general course is reasonable. However, the curriculum only concentrates on the technique knowledge but neglects the knowledge of practical skills.(v) Teaching methods and teaching means are so old-fashioned that they couldn't fit with the requirement of multi-medium teaching method. However, teaching condition has changed a lot.(vi) The basketball general course stresses on teaching technique and neglects thedevelopment of practical and creative ability.(vii) Methods of assessment in basketball teaching are unitary including conclusive assessment and teacher's assessment, which neglect the individual difference and students' major roles.(viii) P. E teachers' academic credentials, structure of teachers' age and structure of teachers' profession are reasonable and the number of teachers with high academic credentials has increased a lot. In addition, the teaching level and scientific research level also increase, and thus these conditions benefit the reform of P. E teaching.(ix) Research on the textbooks has made a great progress, but the structure of textbook is solid and lacks the interesting feature.Basing on the results of this thesis and combining the present situation and the developing tendency with the requirements of basketball general course, the author suggests the following: changing the P. E teachers' views on cultivating students and forming the professional idea in P. E teaching; expanding the teaching contents and developing the role of courses; scientifically choosing teaching contents and focusing on the reform and innovation of teaching methods and teaching means; improving the contents of assessments and forming multi-aspect assessing methods; strengthening the reasonable structure of teachers' team and raising teachers' aptitude.
