The "Two Foundamentals" refers to the foundamental knowledge and the foundamental skills in each school courses in both primary and secondary education. The teaching and training of the "two foundamentals" has always been one of the main objectives at the stage of nine-year compulsory education. With the establishment of the New English Curriculum that is now being carried out throughout China, there is a kind of misunderstanding of the Curriculum with regard to the teaching objectives. It seems that the "two foundamentals" have lost their importance as. the necessary components or bases of students' comprehensive competence. And what is important for the New English Curriculum is the training of students' ability to use the target language, the ability of communication and interaction, instead of the basic knowledge acquisition and basic skill training. This misintepretation of the Curriculum will surely exert unnegligible negative influence on the teaching practice in the English classroom of the nine-year compulsory education.
