The extensive reform in China since the late 1970s from a planned economy to a socialist market economy has resulted in dramatic economic development and growth of the overall strength of the country. The speedy advancement of productive force calls for an adequate supply of human resources and the reserve of trained personnel to ensure the sustainable development. However, as far as the educational sector is concerned, its slow reform proved not in tune with the overall national economic development. Since 1999, education has been reconceived by the Chinese government as knowledge industry that is of fundamental importance and pivotal to the overall national development. Consequently, educational development, as well as that of key infrastructure received precedence over other issues on the national development agenda and comprehensive reform on the system was introduced.Logistics in higher education has always remained the bottleneck of the reform in the sector and faced tremendous challenges. This research considered the issue of the policy document Circular on the Suggestions about Further Promoting the Socialisation of logistics in the Higher EducationSector as signifying the beginning of the period in which reform on logistics system in higher education entered its fast lane. It suggests that government guidance, meticulous administration by the managing authorities, active participation of the institutions concerned and various social sectors, dauntless exploration of the staff concerned altogether contributed to the successful establishment of the multiple effective models that have proved to be particular to individual institutions. In return, changes in the logistics system and improvement in the facilities significantly contributed to the development of the higher education enterprise in the country. This research describes the theoretical basis of the logistics reform and traces the development of the logistics system in Chinese higher education. It also describes the typical operational models of socialising logistic services in this education sector. In-depth analyses are conducted of each of these models. The move of logistics system in higher education towards modern corporation is identified as an emerging trend. The research concludes by exploring some of the key issues to be addressed in the process of establishing and improving management structure of a logistics corporation in the Chinese context.
