The development of science has undergone three main stages by now: integration, differentiation and reintegration. At the present age that all the disciplines are integrated and crossed results from the necessary requirements that they need to develop themselves. Ever since modern times disciplines have had the approach to the utmost differentiation so that the integration of various disciplines is gradually called on and can not be avoided. Yet modern scientific research needs the increasing correlation between disciplines and scientists must show their great attentions to the related fields when they commit the foretelling exploration. The second reason contributed to the integration of disciplines lies in their co-service for the solution of numerous complex and integrative problems arising from the contemporary social practice. That all the contemporary disciplines are integrated and crossed has become a mainstream in the process of disciplines in colleges and universities, and provides us with some experiences that we learn from. As a result, it is urgent for the research of China's higher education to study the discipline-crossing theory and make a summery about the cross-disciplinary building experiences in the universities at home and abroad for the sake of altering the backward situation in the practice of the cross-disciplinary building throughout China's colleges and universities.This paper consists of two parts. The first part deals with the study of discipline-crossing theory on the level of discipline-crossing mechanism, cross-discipline type and discipline-crossing method, among which the analysis of the former stands out. In this part, starting with the origin of "mechanism" in terminology and its inventive transplantation from biology, I browse though the rootstock for and the rule of discipline-crossing, together with the whole process of the organic creation of discipline-crossing and its functional fulfillment, and further I work out the whole order of discipline-crossing mechanism. I not only commit a deep and scientific exploration of the individual of mechanism, but expose its completeness by means ofsynthesis and its philosophic implication, aiming to initiate the construction of a more systemic discipline-crossing mechanism theory. Then I put forward the level types of cross-discipline with a knowledge form by combining theory, history and case studies, and also look into the ways in which disciplines are crossed from the perspective of philosophy and methodology. The second part is concerned with the study of cross-disciplinary building in colleges and universities. It makes a conclusion of the cross-disciplinary building in colleges and universities at home and abroad. In it I attempt to make clear the major modes and total characteristics of cross-disciplines in colleges and universities, and offer suggestions about establishment of cross-discipline team, cultivation of cross-discipline staff, integration of curricula as well as scientific research and management of cross-disciplines, based on the combination of discipline-crossing theory with the practice of its construction. The reason that I do this is to try to provide a more feasible frame of reference for the practice of cross-disciplinary construction in colleges and universities.I make use of the methods of literature, system analysis and so on for my study in this paper.
