In recent years, a new opinion about development has attracted people's attention, which emphases that social development should be based on human beings, but not economic development. In the development of human being, the improving of quality of life (QOL) and the liberation of personality are the core content. So the research of indicators of QOL is becoming the issue that people focus on. China now is in the process of building the so-called well-off society, and the material conditions have reached certain level, its effect on QOL is decreasing. Life satisfaction is becoming an important indicator of QOL.This research is based on a quantitative investigation which contains more than 1600 samples that come from 8 cities of China. The research has described the life satisfaction of urban residents of these cities, and analyzed factors which influence people's QOL. Also, the satisfaction of work, family life and public service are selected to be the subject indicators. These indicators can be used to measure QOL, finding out key issues about peoples' life satisfaction and helping government make policies.There are four parts in the thesis. First part The introduction starts with the research theme, explains the theory meaning and realistic meaning, studies current research situation both at home and abroad .It also introduces the research design and approaches in detail. All these have established the foundation for the ensuing chapters.Second part has described the life satisfaction of urban residents of 8 cities. The result shows that their life satisfactions are relatively high. The relevant statistical analysis indicates some individual characteristics (such as income) have influence on residents' satisfaction with QOL, while some others (such as gender, age , education and marriage) have no significant influence.Third part of the dissertation focuses on the selection of subjective indicators. The regression analysis of different life realms indicates that work satisfaction, family life satisfaction and public services satisfaction can partly explain life satisfaction as a whole. It reflects the influence from three different dimensions, individual, family and society.In fourth part conclusion and discussion, the relationship between GDP and life satisfaction, the combination of objective indicators and subjective indicators, the selection of subjective indicators are the issues being discussed.
