Body is closely related to sports from the perspectives of both mind-body dualism and monism, which is determined by the intrinsic prescription and extrinsic representation of sports. However, different views towards mind-body relationship differ in their influences on the development of sports. Therefore, it is of great theoretical and practical importance to clarify the influence on sports exerted by the changes of philosophical views of mind-body relationship.In mind-body dualism, body is treated as a well-structured machine and bodily movement is related to skills and physical strength, but has nothing to do with intelligence. Such deep-rooted and long-standing view belittles the body and is thus disadvantageous to the further development of sports. However, in mind-body monism, body is considered as the rationale of the existence of the subjective ego. It exhibits intelligence in sports activity, hence is important and irreplaceable. Accordingly, it rectifies the traditional view towards sports activities.By means of literature review, historical and logical analysis, expert consultation and etymology, the present paper carries out an analysis of the historical and cultural background as well as the evolution of mind-body dualism and monism in Western philosophy, expounds their own views on the body, and clarifies their respective influences upon the development of sports, aiming to provide a new perspective for the current discussion about sports in sports philosophy.The paper holds that:1) In mind-body dualism, body is debased to a mechanism with a corresponding set of techniques employed to operate itself as an object, these techniques including the arrangement of participants in space, the control of actions, the planning of movements and the allocation of strength. In such a careful series of planning, the body is more and more closely combined with the objects it manipulates and is accordingly tamed as the carrier of strength and time.
