The newly issued Curriculum Standard for middle school English teaching proposes the objectives"for the development of all students, for the full development of students, and for the personality development of students". At the beginning of the 1990's, our country has raised the slogan of"quality education"and has made it the aim of educational reform. We have also adopted a series of steps to try to change the present tendency of examination-oriented education. Coincidentally, the Chinese translated version of Gardner's Multiple Intelligences was published in 1999. It was recognized with surprise that the multiple intelligence theory and the Chinese educational reform happened to have similar views. Multiple intelligences offer a realm open to the realization of the three"developments", especially for personality education. Upon this stage teachers can actualize personality education toward a democratic, student-centered, creative, and harmonious perspective, so as to satisfy the personal learning demand of students and benefit every student to the maximum in the teaching process. The standards for and the methods of evaluation should be multiple, in order to release the school education from written tests and to pay more attention to the training of various intelligences of different people. Since intelligences are closely linked to people's daily life,"we should put the evaluation in our real life and social environment, otherwise we will doubt whether it can represent the human's intelligence behave properly"(Garnder 1999). This reminds us to recognize the limitations of written tests. We should increase the use of situational tests in order to let the students know their own selfhood value and to make the teachers know their students better so as to find out their different potential characteristics and offer them suitable teaching approaches and methods. The whole thesis consists six parts. In the first part, some research about intelligence in psychology, the definition and the contents of multiple intelligences. The next two parts focus on the new demand of teaching evaluation in the New Curriculum Standard and the shortages of current English teaching evaluation. The fourth part is about the effect of multiple intelligences theory if it was used in the teaching evaluation. The last two parts are related with the design of using multiple intelligences theory in English teaching evaluation. |
