The thesis is based on the relation between foreign language teaching and testing, which mainly discusses and analyses classroom tests. Accordingly it argues that the diagnostic function of classroom test does exist. Heaton put forward that classroom test has practical meaning which is in favor of checking the learner's performance and adjusting teaching plans and methods for teachers. Dealing with the relation between teaching and testing well, can not only help students to know the emphases of learning, but can also help teachers to control the class teaching.Language testing puts the role of diagnosis in the first place. A good testing can benefit students and teachers in many aspects. In junior high school, foreign language testing mostly consists of mid-term test, end-of-term test, placement test and classroom test. More and more concern has been paid to classroom test which can examine students on a certain language point timely by English teachers. Then what is the function of classroom test? What is the relation between testing and teaching? This paper is intended to answer these questions. The whole thesis consists of six chapters. The first chapter mainly discusses the relation between language teaching and testing and shows the definition, aims, methods and the practical meaning of classroom test. A good testing has better effects on teaching and learning. By describing the project briefly, the thesis puts forward the hypothesis: The diagnostic function of classroom test does exist. The second chapter is a brief presentation on the current research in testing field."Examination Guiding"reflects that examination does not act in accord with teaching. Teachers teach for the sake of the students'high scores and neglect the needs of students and the function of testing. A reasonable classroom test paper should cover with objective and subjective items. The main task of the test is to understand and diagnose learning and teaching. The fourth chapter focuses on the research methods in this thesis: objects, subjects, instruments and methodology. Firstly classroom tests are designed and discussed in order to prove if the diagnostic function does exist. Secondly the data results of the research is analyzed, the examinees are the eighth grade students of junior high school. The fifth chapter is the part of the empirical study of the thesis-the analysis of classroom tests and the questionnaire. The first part discusses the papers according as students'different language problems. The second part analyzes the data results, the questionnaire is composed of the condition of students'classroom learning and the feedback on classroom test. The sixth chapter is the presentation of conclusion and proposals.
