English is a widely used tool for communication in the world. The main goal of teaching English in China is to develop an active repertoire of English for use outside the classroom. Among the four basic skills—listening, speaking, reading and writing, reading is the most critical one for Chinese learners of English because reading is learners' main channel to acquire knowledge and it can provide students with necessary information of learning and enforce the learning of vocabulary and grammar. But the problem in our English education is that learners of English do not have good reading abilities; many students couldn't do well in reading comprehension, which inhabits the development of spoken language. Therefore, it is important to improve students' reading skill and develop their reading habits in secondary vocational schools. In this thesis, the author analyzes the conditions of reading abilities for students in Secondary Vocational School and present some problems acquired from a reading questionnaire. Then, the author considers categories of reading, some basic theories of reading comprehension and some factors concerning reading. In order to solve students' problems in reading, the author discusses some useful teaching strategies such as creating students' interest of reading, expanding students' vocabulary, teaching how to use a dictionary appropriately, emphasizing discourse analysis and understanding syntax, etc. The author hopes that these methods will get students to read more effectively and help teachers of English instruct reading more efficiently.
