The purpose of this study is to examine the effectiveness of cooperative group learning used as an intervention to cultivate students self-efficacy for English learning among elementary school students. This study is based on the theory of self-efficacy beliefs proposed by Albert Bandura (1977).Two hundred and fifty-seven students from the Affiliated Primary School of Fujian Normal Universitry participated in the study. Students' self-efficacy for learning was tracked as they worked on structured , unstructured cooperative learning groups and traditional whole class teaching classrooms during their regular English lesson. Questionnaire of self-efficacy was administered pre- and -post intervention. The findings revealed no statistically significance. For control class the self-efficacy showed a trend of decline and for experimental class the self-efficacy showed a trend of increase . The findings are significant for both practice and research.
