Mathematical representation is important for students' better understanding of mathematical concept, which is crucial to students' mathematics achievement. On the other hand, if a student has a good understanding of a mathematical concept, he/she will have a rich mathematical representation. This thesis first gives a definition of mathematical representation, followed by its definition. It then investigates the roles of the two kinds of representations (external and internal representation) in developing students' understanding of mathematical concepts. We found that visual representations, antitype and its variation, examples and counter-examples, and symbolic representations are the four main factors that affect students' understanding of mathematical concepts. Finally;we make same suggestions as to how to use appropriate mathematical representations to facilitate students' understanding of abstract mathematical concepts.
