| In the history of language teaching, grammar has played an important role and has been a controversial topic among researchers and teachers in the Field of ELT. Grammar is the core of the language. Without grammar, language cannot be constituted. While the importance of grammar has been widely recognized by teachers of senior high school, grammar teaching in Chinese schools is far from being successful. English teachers are often faced with dilemmas and are often at a loss what to do to ensure success. Though they spend a lot of time teaching the students grammar rules and doing drill exercises, the students still can't transform grammar knowledge into grammar ability to serve the purpose of communicating. Grammatical problems arise abundantly in student's composition. In light of this, it's necessary to explore a new approach to learn English grammar instead of using the traditional form.Learning English grammar through writing offers a new way to solve this problem.The essay, laying emphasis on English grammar learning at senior high school level, discusses and proves the positive effect that writing brings to grammar learning. It also provides the detailed ways of leaning grammar through writing in and outside the class.In this paper, the characteristics of grammar learning of the senior high school students, and the defects of traditional grammar learning approach are firstly presented;the feature and advantage of writing as a bridge to learning grammar are then provided to prove the idea that writing approach will be more effective for grammar learning. In this essay, the linguistic theory models, especially the Comprehensible Output Theory, the Affective Filter Theory and Monitor theory, plus the Automatization Theory, and the theory of Cognitive Psychology are adopted. According to the theoretical bases, we can reach a conclusion that, as a creative output activity, writing is the most effective way to facilitate students' successful use of grammar rules in communication.Then the essay expounds the positive role of writing in grammar learning and what are the ways of learning grammar through writing efficiently in English teaching practice.In an attempt to prove the positive role of writing in English grammar learning, this paper reports on a one-semester-long control experiment on grammar learning through writing .The subjects include 50 freshmen of Class one in Grade three at Xiang Fan No.9Middle School. The results suggest that learning English grammar through writing not only plays a positive role in improving writing competence, but also have a positive effect on language proficiency in general.I hope that learning grammar through writing can offer a new teaching method and teaching concept for senior high school teachers to help them teach English grammar efficiently. |
