As China has become more and more integrated into the world, English, a tool of communication with the outside world, has gained more and more popularity. Although much time and many efforts have been put into English teaching and learning, the status quo of EFLT in China today is not very satisfactory. Many learners may get high scores in the test, however, they still can not achieve such satisfactory outcomes as great capacity for language or eloquence in communication. Though this situation may be caused by many factors, the main problem seems to be that these learners lack responsibility for their language learning and they do not know how to control their learning process. Therefore, it is quite crucial to raise the awareness of the roles of the teachers and students, to change their beliefs and stress the learners'autonomy. Thus, the objective of teaching and learning should be accepted as"how to learn"instead of just"what to learn".Nowadays in our country quality-oriented education has been carried out gradually, the essence of which is to improve students' creative ability and the key element of which is research-based learning. The core of research-based learning is just learning autonomy. It is an important way for students to change the situation of "high score and low capacity", to facilitate the improvement and development of students' comprehensive quality , to implement the goal of quality-oriented education , to advocate autonomous language learning and to promote self- regulation.Learning autonomy has been a buzzword in foreign Language teaching in the recent twenty years. Especially in western context, the concern with teaching and learning has shifted from the teachers' teaching to the students' learning. By 1981 Holec (1981:3) had defined autonomy as'the ability to take charge of one's own learning'.
