The purpose of this research is to identify the types and severity of language disorders, and articulation accuracy of the mental retarded children. This study can be used to think how to design the teaching plan which may remedy language disorders, how to execute the plan of the language healing of mental retarded children ,and how to inquire into the improving approach of the language healing. It also can help teachers organize the teaching materials for language training, and research the pathogeny, identification, treatment, and training of mental retarded children's language disorders.To achieve the purpose , this study apply several methods , such as literature research , actual inquiry research, individual identification research, statistical analytic research and comparative research . Through the author's applied the diagnostic screening test revised by professor Lin Baogui in 1984 Taiwan of China, the author at random assesses 30 mental retarded children ranged from 2-9 years of age .There were 22 boys and 8 girls. All the children were evaluated with their language abilities of comprehension, whispering discrimination, mandarin phonetic articulation , and speech expression individually. The results found :(1)Including boys and girls, the language disorders of the mental retarded children were severe and various. Most of the children indicated obvious deficiency in language abilities of reception, expression, and articulation . Especially in articulation disorder(56.67%),delayed speech (46.67%),weak comprehension (40.00%), voice disorder(36.67%),weak hearing comprehension(30.00%),without stuttering and deafness.(2)Most of moderate and severe mental retardation have various language impairment, including 90 percent moderate mental retardation , 90 percent severe mental retardation ,and 36.67 percent mild mental retardation .(3)According to the identification on the function of articulation accuracy apparatus, Through F-TEST, there was no significant differences between boys and girls(P>0.05). There was no significant differences between boys and girls in language disorders. Through F-TEST, there was significant differences among different IQ levels of the mental retardation(P<0.01,P<0.05).(4)Mild mental retardation was better than moderate and severe mental retardation in articulation of mandarin spelling. The obvious false articulation were"o, k, n, h, f, ang, eng, ing, ong".(5)The sequence of learning mandarin tone for mental retardation was"high and level tone---falling tone ---neutral tone ---rising tone ---falling rising tone".
