Along with the promulgation of the relevant national policies, the society pay more attention to special groups, and the study on adaptative behaviors of the mentally retarded also mature gradually. But the objects of study are mainly juveniles. Place focus on schools, kindergartens, rehabilitation institutions and family. Methods mainly are the survey and experiment and less motive research. The study on the adaptive behaviors development of teenager with mental retardation in the countryside will probe into the casuses of mental retardation, the development level and characteristics of adaptive behaviors. Besides, it can help the people recognize the mentally retarded and their family in the countryside.This study selects a 19-year-old moderate mentally retarded teenager in the countryside "L" as the research object, uses case study method, collects related data through in-depth interviewing and recalling L' growth. The article analyzes the rural mentally retarded causes and the characteristics and the conditions of the development of adaptive behaviors from six phases, such as ignorance before born, blank value after the birth to infants stage, late childhood and then to youth. Research conclusions are as follows:Firstly, the reasons of L' disability are various, mainly by all kinds of bad factors, including the mother's adverse factors during pregnancy, lag medical and health level, backward parenting level, imbalance of family structure and environment, comparely deficient educational conditions.Secondly, the development of L' adaptative behaviors experiences 4 stages: poor-good-poor-good, and adolescence is the main transformation period, but the overall developmental level is low and unbalanced.Thirdly, the conditions about the development of adaptive behavior of L include the support of government's policy, change of parents'idea, improvement of family environment, harmonious relationship of villagers, increasing of physiological age, exercise of life ability.According to the results of this study, this article puts forward the following four suggestions on how to prevent the mental retardation in the countryside and improve adaptive behaviors:First, the state should enact related policies, such as early prevention, development of education, social welfare. Second, the health care sector must be responsible for early prevention and accurate diagnosis. Third, the mentally retarded and family should do well in pregnancy health care and educate actively. Fourth, the society and community provide support to the family with mental retardation.
