The best speed structure is a key factor to the excellent result of 400m dash, while twodecisive factors affecting the speed are stride frequency and stride length, which form acontinuous changing combination influencing the speed structure significantly during the fullcourse. With studying the full changing patterns of stride length and stride frequency and theirinfluence on speed structure, we can get theoretical basis for the athlete's training. Theresearch methods adopted in the statement involve files reference, visiting specialists,mathematical statistics and logical analysis. With mathematical statistics analysis to the sportsparameters and date produced by sixteen athletes in the finals of the sixth and seventh WorldTrack and Field Championship Contest, we can find the changing patterns of stride length andstride frequency and their influence on speed structure within each speed stage. Adoptingrelative and factor analysis, the thesis elaborates the growth at each stage in the full coursespeed structure of 400m dash, and stride length and stride frequency as the two main factorsinfluencing the speed structure. (1) Athletes start to slow down after 50-100m and the declineof the speed is drastic, and the speed of latter part influences athletes' final result more thanthe influence of the former part. Therefore, if athletes try to slow down the decline of theirspeed during the latter part of the running, it will help them to achieve better results. (2) Stridefrequency contributes more to the overall speed of 400m dash than stride length. The stridelength in 400m dash changes not much. The reason of the speed decline is because athletescould not maintain the pace. (3) An over-accelerated start striding is the main factor affectingthe full course speed structure. This start is related to the excessively high stride frequency .Itis suggested that the stride length could be appropriately at the first 50m accelerated runningafter the start on the basis of not affecting start movement and speed. This will reduce oreliminate the negative effects of over accelerating caused by excessively high stride frequencyin accelerate start running. (4) The combination of stride length and stride frequency tends tobecome reasonable in the speed-keeping stage, and it becomes the most harmonious in thesecond-highest speed stage, however, the harmonious and reasonable combination cannotmaintain and develop in the 250-300m (SF6,SF7 and SL6,SL7) stage, so that athletes cannotkeep high stride frequency (SF8). Finally all the above indicates that the excellent speedstructure is much more important than stride frequency and stride length only.
