Reading is an important way for people to obtain information and acquire knowledge.Besides,it is also one of the major inputs in English acquisition and plays a significant role in English teaching in senior high school.But during the actual English teaching process,there exist various problems regarding reading among the students,such as a shortage of vocabulary,a lack of reading motivation,inappropriate use of reading strategies,and narrow range of reading and so on.In addition,teachers have been distressing themselves about how to adopt different teaching methods to improve the students' reading ability.Under this circumstance,this thesis attempts to explore whether the application of reading strategies can improve the students' reading ability.This research,which is done through questionnaire,experiments and interview,is carried out between two Grade One classes taught by the author.This thesis firstly outlines the research background,the necessity and the purpose of reading strategy instruction.Secondly,it elaborates the definitions and modes of reading,the definitions and classifications of reading strategies as well as some relevant researches at home and abroad.At the first stage of the experiment,the author employs the scores from the unified English examination conducted at the beginning of the term as the pre-test of the experiment and conducts a questionnaire among the students from the two classes so as to understand the students' opinions and the current use of reading strategies.Through the analysis of the questionnaire the teacher can help the students overcome their weaknesses in reading by conducting reading strategy instruction in the experimental class.In this class,the students are encouraged to make reading plans,reflect on themselves on time,build up their own vocabulary and carry out reading strategy instruction.At the later stage of the experiment,students at different levels are interviewed to understand their feelings and opinions regarding the training of reading strategies and their scores from the term unified English examination are used as the post-test of the experiment.After the experiment,the scores of the pre-test and post-test are analyzed through SPSS 16.0.From the results,it can be concluded that the students who have the training of reading strategies make more significant progress than those having the traditional reading instruction,which shows that reading strategy instruction can help improve the students' reading ability.At the end of this thesis,the author concludes all the findings of this research,having an understanding of the present situation of employing reading strategies and realizing that the students' reading capabilities and the awareness adopting reading strategies have been improved.After that,several tips for Grade One students and teachers are proposed.In the end,the author reflects on the disadvantages of the research,hoping to avoid them in the future.
