English reading course has always been emphasized in high schools. However, despite the fact that both teachers and students have made great efforts, the result is still unsatisfactory. This kind of symptom of "high input, low output" greatly afflicts us. Something is wrong with our reading teaching, for reading is often regarded as a course for teaching pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary only. As a result, teachers concentrate on new words, language points and sentence structures, while students try to memorize them mechanically. The traditional method teaches students to learn language knowledge in an isolated situation, ignoring the need of developing student skills in analyzing the whole text, improving their background knowledge and cultivating their ability to solve problems. On the other hand, in the textbook of New Senior English for China, the number of the new words is too limited. At the same time, the content of the reading material is old. It's hard to arouse the students' interests. The author tries to find a solution to this problem by experimenting on newspaper-aided reading teaching. 102 students in two classes of grade 1 in a senior high school were involved in the experiment, and the experiment lasted two years. In this paper, the author first proves the necessity and feasibility of the experiment, then reports the procedures and findings of the study on newspaper-aided reading teaching in high school.Based on a review of literature about teaching reading skills to EFL students, the author combines theory with practice in the experiment. According to the Syllabus of English Course in Compulsory Education and High School, the teaching material is not just the textbook. The textbook is a part of teaching material. The teachers should develop new teaching material actively. English newspapers are considered to be an excellent source of authentic that can enrich and enliven language learning. Using newspapers in language classroom is a new trend throughout the world. How to explore the great potential of the newspapers and make the best of it in the language classroom has placed a great challenge to English teachers. The article focused and talks about the great advantages that newspapers have in training students in reading. The author tries to inquire into a new pattern of the teaching of English newspapers from two aspects: to cultivate the strategy of reading English and to hold activities according to newspapers. As we all know good habits, teachers' guidance and students' active participation help students shape into good reading strategies. The experiment attaches great importance to help students raise reading speed, improve reading skills and acquire background knowledge of English-speaking countries.
