In big cities, population distribution and public traffic routes & stations have an effect on each other; they have inner relationship, develop with each other. The concordant layout of public traffic facilities will help to lead the inhabitants living in the inner city out, bring on population suburbanization and make population distribution more reasonable. Otherwise, the change of population distribution will also have great influence on the public traffic routes and nets. In addition, the relationship between population and public traffic is same as other human-natural relationship. It also contains rhythm. So study on this topic has very important meaning and academic proofs.Shanghai is one of the greatest cities with the most amount of population in the domestic. It has an integrated and developed public traffic system, the relationship between population and public traffic is obvious in this city, so this city as a study sample is typical. The author will use some statistical means and spatial analytic methods, as well as other research ways of human geography or demography. Through building a concept model of the relation between population and public traffic and adopting case studies, the author analyses two major relations, one is population with routine public traffic; the other is population with urban rail transit according to the actual situations in Shanghai.
