With the great changes of the environment, the schools have been faced with pressure of organizational change. And principal is the key to a successful organizational change. However, there seems to be few studies concerning as a change facilitator, how a principal leads school organizational change under the unique context of Chinese schools. This study, choosing a primary school as a case, aims to investigate how a principal facilitate the change of school organization under the framework of educational culture in China.Case study is the main research method employed in this study. The case chosen in this study is the A Primary School in Shanghai. From as early as 1990 when the Principal Z became the principal of A Primary School, he has been undertaking a series of organizational changes. Data was collected in different ways including interview (with teachers, employees and the principal), on-site observation, participative observation, and documents analysis. Finally, this study concludes nine interventions of Principal Z during the organizational change process of A Primary School.During the period of starting change, the interventions of Principal Z include analysis of the situation of school and self-reflection. During the period of building vision, the interventions of Principal Z include describing an earning future statement, communicating vision and planning for change. During the period of motivating change, interventions of Principal Z include obtaining first outcomes and overcoming resistance. During the period of keeping motivity, the interventions of Principal Z include providing resources and re-building organizational culture.After studying of Principal Z's interventions, we find that in the change of A Primary School there is a change facilitator team including the administrator leadership, teachers, employees of school and the External Change Facilitators.
