As one of the most important aims in foreign language teaching, the training on reading ability is always a must for us teachers. As reading is viewed as an interaction between the reader and the text, whether the readers use reading strategy or not is of great value. This thesis intends to test and discuss the effectiveness of strategy training in an on-going reading course. Previous researchers have emphasized the importance of reading strategies to the readers in the course of reading. Different reading strategies have been studied and described by a number of researchers who are interested in this field. This thesis aims at evaluating the effects and results of an eight-week strategy training program. Some of the factors that influence the training are also discussed and analyzed. The subjects of the study is the students in Senior Grade two in Haidian Experimental Middle School. Chapter One gives a brief introduction of the whole thesis. Chapter Two introduces some basic issues concerning reading, including the concept of reading, reading process, some factors that have some effect on reading and some learning and reading strategies, with an emphasis on one particular reading strategy: inferring word meaning from context. Chapter Three describes the training program. In this training, seventy students in the two classes are the subjects to be studied and thirty papers are chosen at will and analyzed.
