When we analyze and evaluate a course book from aspects such as proficiency, reliability, practicality and using effect as well, we have got to take its roles and functions into consideration, which are key aspects in schooling course. Due to the fact that course books' value is embodied in the very course, data of course book evaluation should be collected more from schooling than from a course book itself. Research of course books evaluation should be implemented from four aspects, they are aspect of knowledge and science, aspect of moral and culture, aspect of psychology and acquisition and aspect of compilation as well. Based on some international successful experience and along these four directions, course book analysis and evaluation can be carried out by taking these four steps. First step is to introduce the course book generally, second step is to collect data both from course book itself and schooling course, third step is to analyze the course book from four aspects, last step is to rank the course book from aspects such as proficiency, reliability, practicality and compiling levels as well. Senior schools in the City of Baotou adopted newly compiled English course book in autumn of 2003, this paper carried out a lot of research based on the comparison between original purposes of this course book and present schooling situations so to clarify whether or not the original purposes can be served in this area. Firstly, a general introduction of the course book and an original evaluation are launched. Secondly, a series of investigative papers consisting of students', teachers' and a sample of self-assessing is designed based on theories of course book evaluation mentioned above. Tutors and students who are using the course book were investigated randomly. According to the data of difficulty levels, compiling proprietary, clarification of teaching aims, interesting levels, cultural orientation and learning strategies etc., we find out that the presentschooling situations of the course book has a long way away from the original purposes of the book compilers because of three defects. The first defect is that the difficulty level of this course book has been increased by the fact that it is of features of cross-fields. The second defect is the difficulty level of the course book is too high to learn for senior students in this area. The third defect is that this course book consists of too many materials. The resolutions to these problems are improvement and adaptation of the materials and to set different teaching purposes for different students of distinctive knowledge and ability of English. After fully discussing, four supplementary suggestions are set. The first one is to add drills and practice of language point. The second is to simplify assignment of writing and integrating reading. The third one is to change the original monotonous course purposes into a series of four different types. The last one is to re-organize the order of parts in each unit. Besides, teachers should accept advanced teaching conceptions and develop their professional accomplishment so to improve their teaching levels.
