Course book is a carrier of teaching organization and implementation. And thequality of course book plays an important role in teachers’ teaching and students’learning. Therefore, it is of great significance to evaluate the course book. Meanwhile,PEP New Senior English is as one of the most widely used English course book forsenior schools in China, and Content-based Instruction is one of the hottest issues inforeign language teaching researches, so it is a very meaningful research work toevaluate its quality and value from a CBI perspective.This thesis firstly elaborates on the essence of CBI concerning its definition, itsrationale, its characteristic, modes for classroom teaching and its theoretical origins.Then it summarizes the criteria of foreign language course book evaluation at abroadand home. Furthermore, on the basis of the new English Curriculum Standard issuedby Chinese Ministry of Education, the essence of CBI and the criteria of course bookevaluation, the paper puts forward eleven criteria for interior course book evaluationwith regard to four aspects. And then the compulsory1to5copies of PEP New SeniorEnglish for China were evaluated by these criteria. Through evaluating its objectives,teaching methods, course book contents and its organization, the paper tries to findout whether course books match the criteria of interior course book evaluation fromCBI perspective, and finally the paper found the advantages and disadvantages ofcourse books of PEP New Senior English for China.After analysis, the thesis draws the conclusion: the course books of PEP NewSenior English for China embody the criteria of interior course book evaluation fromCBI perspective. And there are many advantages of course books of PEP New SeniorEnglish for China, such as, the selection of contents reflect the interdisciplinaryknowledge. And the contents of the course books reflect the characteristics ofuniversality, thoughtfulness and times; besides, the arrangement of every unit isflexible, so it is good for creativity and independent learning ability of students. Onthe other hand, the course books still have some weaknesses. For example, themes of some units less reflect Chinese cultural; topics of some units consider less aboutrural-urban differences. And the arrangement of some units’ contents is unreasonable.Finally, based on the evaluation results, the writer offers some suggestions tocompliers and teachers.
