Performance assessment is a hot point in the international education evaluation, in recent years. The author thinks that performance assessment is suitable for oral communication assessment. The thesis makes a study on the application of performance assessment in oral communication assessment from the perspective of theory and practice. From the perspective of theory, the thesis analyzes the features of the influential interactive approaches to language testing nowadays, probes the similarities between performance assessment and language testing models and defines the core concept oral communication assessment initially. From the perspective of practice, the thesis makes a study and probe on the content, instrument, method, assessment indicator system and scoring of oral communication assessment.The research aims to find a convenient and workable scheme for oral communication assessment and cover the shortage in the practice of oral communication assessment and serve oral communication teaching. The thesis falls into five parts.Chapter I analyzes the necessity of studying oral communication performance assessment, points out the contradiction between dynamic oral communication performance assessment and static paper testing, the shortage and the difficulty in oral communication performance assessment. Chapter II is a literature review on oral communication performance assessment, finds that the influential interactive approaches to language testing in language testing nowadays can be used for reference in oral communication performance assessment and finds out the theoretical support in linguistics, pragmatics, communication psychology, multi-intelligence theory for oral communication performance assessment. Chapter III is an investigation report of the status quo of oral communication of the students from Shanghai.
