| Teacher language is the special language that teachers use in the process of teaching in classroom and which functions not only as a major channel of knowledge impartation, but also is the bridge by which teachers communicate with students. Whether the teaching task can be implemented successfully or not will be decided directly by how the language is used by teachers. More and more linguists begin to concentrate on the study of teacher language, for their awareness of the importance of teacher language to classroom teaching. There is no doubt that the study in teacher language will develop the study of linguistics to a new area. It is proved that men and women are different in language use and have different communication styles. However, the research of gender effects on teacher language is still a relative new topic in the field of linguistics. Classroom offers itself as a well-suited context for exploring gender-related influence in teacher language. Gender-related differences in teacher language are explored by the author in the present paper.At the beginning of the paper, the author makes a review of the established theories on language and gender and then an introduction to teacher language is related briefly. The investigation of 6 teachers in classroom and a survey among 70 students are made by the author to explore the communication style differences between male teachers and female teachers in classroom. The study indicates that there exist gender differences in the style of teacher language. Although teacher language, as a kind of professional language, has its own characteristics, gender differences in communication style can still be found. Gender-related differences in teacher language and implications for further improvement are also given by the author in the present research.The research is believed to be a significant attempt in both linguistic and educational area. |
