The development of society calls for constant advance in EFL (English as a Foreign Language) teaching in our country. The new round of curriculum reform with the aim of students' development is pushing forward the reform of classroom teaching and the change of students' behaviour. The most important objective of education is to cultivate students' self-confidence and sense of success, foster their consciousness of competition and spirit of cooperation so as to enable them to be fully confident in their future, face the reality with persistent efforts and face all kinds of challenges in their lives, and to enable them to reach their reasonable aims through effective use of social means and cooperation with others. Therefore cooperative learning groups are getting more and more popular among teachers of English and students in EFL teaching and learning in junior high schools. Guided by the theories of Constructivism and based on studies in psychology and the author's personal teaching experience, this thesis expounds on the application of an effective form of cooperative learning—cooperative learning groups in EFL teaching in junior high schools, which aims at solving the common problems found among students: learning under the influence of change of mood, lack of initiative and self-control. The thesis gives the definition of cooperative learning groups and states their differences with the traditional ways of learning, the formation of groups and placement of seats, the roles of the teachers and rules of evaluation. The thesis explains through some examples how cooperative learning groups are applied in teaching Reading, Writing and Oral English. Finally the thesis expounds on the roles of the teachers and their reflections as well as feedback from the students on cooperative learning groups.
