In 1859, Herbert Spencer, the English philosopher,educationist, published his famous book What Knowledge is of Most Worth, in which he illustrates his view, with facts, that scientific knowledge is of most learning value. This thesis will focus on Spencer's worth preference. It is expressed in this thesis that what kind of knowledge is of most value depends on many aspects, and that the value in learning depends on such conditions as learners'frames of mind, the function of the course, the social demands, and so on. Some learners profit most from scientific knowledge, some from linguistic knowledge, and others from other fields of knowledge.This study tries to explore the amount of value in students'learning by applying the value engineering theory and method in management science. Learner's value, which is expressed in the following formula, is the ratio between the function that students obtain from their course study and the cost that results from their study: CV = F(V stands for value, F for function, and C for cost) Value engineering is defined as follows: with the cooperation between students and teachers, parents and schools, state and societies, value engineering is a series of organized activities which focus on course function analysis and aim to enlarge students'learning value at the lowest cost, so as to realize the necessary function of the course. This thesis analyzes students'learning value with examples, and discusses ways and methods to increase students'learning value. Such new concepts as learning value, value engineering, course function, learning designing are put forward. Methods to value quantization and comparison are listed, which offer a new train of thought to the study of learning value.The theme of this thesis is like this: students'learning is a process of investing and profiting that contains the comparison of the value. Students'individual structure of intelligence, the course function, the demands of the market and many other factors influence students'learning value, which can appear higher and positive to some students, and lower or even negative to others.It is stated in this thesis that in order to increase students'learning value the following aspects are necessary:firstly,reinforce the measuring of students'intelligent factors and choose their learning materials according to their practice; secondly, categorize the course scientifically so as to intensify its function; thirdly, diversify the demands for students; fourthly, enhance the study and publicity of vocational classification in order for students to have a stronger power for vocation orientation; fifthly, enhance the forecast of labor resources so as to make full use of the students; sixthly, improve teachers'quality to...
