Discussion On Some Issues Of American Community College's Evolvement

In order to achieve the goal of 15% gross-enrollment ration of higher education by the year of 2010, our country has implemented enrollment-expanding policy in higher education from 1996. Facing with great opportunity, higher vocational academies have gained rapid development the same as level with American community colleges. But owing to varieties reasons, the higher vocational academies are in inferior position competing with the liberal educational institutions.American community college which has more then 100 years history has become the most active part of the American higher education and acted as a very important role. Its accumulation experience has positive meanings to our higher vocational academies.This dissertation analyzed the history backgrounds and social factors which contributed to American community college's rise firstly. Then it analyzed the educative ideals impelling the development of American community college, which are educational opportunity equalization, lifelong education, new vocationalism and education internationalization. The most important reason of American community college's success is that it can adjust its functions very quickly to impersonal environment, from the single transfer education function to becoming all-around educational institution with transfer education, vocational education and community education. Finally, combining with the actuality of our higher vocational education, this paper brings three inspirations, the first is the government should strengthen macro-leading and finance supporting, the second is what we should strengthen communicating between liberal education and vocational education, the third is what higher vocational academies should keep the vocational education dominant position, at the same time, they should try for the transfer education and community education.
