With the increasing uses of computers and the rapid development of the Internet and multimedia technology, network teaching, as based on multimedia technology, is becoming more and more popular. In recent years, network English teaching, which is different from any other traditional English teaching methods, has witnessed unprecedented growth. It has also changed the way of learning on the students'part. Therefore, it is of great value to have practice of network English teaching, to research on it and to make it a common teaching method. This thesis has been inspired by the study of some other researchers on the same topic. Guided by some language learning theories and multimedia teaching theories, the author has conducted a case study of the multimedia network English teaching in Sanmei School. It is to have an objective evaluation of students'English study in the new network teaching environment. The existing problems will also be analyzed to prepare a better stage for better network teaching to come. It can be regarded as a small contribution to the practice of multimedia network English teaching. The case study focuses on the following aspects: the changes of the English teaching methods in a multimedia teaching environment in Sanmei School (a junior middle school), the influence of multimedia network English teaching on students learning, and the problems that need solving. The study has been carried out in the form of questionnaires, covering students'learning strategies in the multimedia teaching environment and their actual performance and needs in study. To have a clearer picture of the situation, the author has made a comparison of the exam scores of the experimental network teaching class and those of the ordinary class and made a careful analysis of the results. Moreover, the author has interviewed some English teachers and students for further evidence to her propositions. The study shows that as one of the first few schools to carry out multimedia network English teaching in the local region, Sanmei School has made considerable achievements in this field. However, the teaching effect is still far from satisfactory. The problems are mainly as follows: First, the rich information on the local school network and the Internet has not been fully made use of; second, teachers have failed to tear themselves away from their traditional role of a controller in the traditional classroom so that to be the role of a director or a coordinator in the new teaching environment, and last, students are mostly learning with the same strategies. Instead of having self access to the learning resources on the network, they are still depending on classroom teaching for the knowledge they want. A lot more needs to be done before multimedia English teaching can be given full play in teaching. The author has come to the conclusion that to have effective multimedia network English teaching, teachers must first play the new role of a director or coordinator for the students. He should try to make full use of the abundant teaching materials on the network. On the other hand, great attention must be paid to the cultivation of students'ability to sort out the information before collecting it. Students must be given more chances to practice so that they can adapt their learning strategies to network teaching. As for the school, it should take great efforts to improve students'English usage competence while stressing their examination scores, a conflict between quality-oriented education and exam-oriented education. The study of multimedia network English teaching will greatly contribute to its great development prospects.
