As we all know, English grammar plays a very important part inEnglish learning process. The textbook, the main recourses and tools forgrammar teaching and learning, is the foundation of achieving educationaleffects. With the encouragement of curriculum reform, more and moreteachers and scholars realize that it is time for us to advocate a newcollaborative and situational teaching method and to spurn the traditionalmechanical and passive learning and teaching pattern. Meanwhile, thestudents’ dominant position in English learning should be embodied andstudents should be encouraged to discover and construct knowledge bythemselves actively. In China, for most of the students, English class is themain environment for them to command the language. Therefore, it isnecessary to design the reasonable and effective English grammar teachingactivities to ensure the students can master the grammar points firmly andimprove their comprehensive English ability.This thesis tries to analyze the designing of English grammar teachingactivities of the two series of textbooks from China and England---NSECand Intermediate Matters written by the English scholars. By means of thecomparative analysis, the thesis provides some inspiration and suggestion onthe basis of the analysis of difference between the two series of books.According to the thesis, when designing the grammar teaching activities, weshould strengthen the authenticity of language input, stand out the practiceof language, and focus on the vividness, flexibility and the layout of thegrammar activities. The thesis is intended to initiate more and more teachersand scholars to pay great attention to the English grammar teachingactivities, to help the teachers to use the textbook comprehensively andcorrectly and to help the students’practice more plentifully and effectively. At the same time, by this kind of comparison, it is necessary to promotethe quality of class teaching and the students’ ability to use English tocommunicate.Five parts are included in the thesis. Chapter One talks about thebackground, the introduction of the two series of textbooks and theimportance of the research. The relevant research at home and abroad andthe definition of grammar and the activity designing are covered in theChapter Two. Chapter Three mainly discusses the relevant theories of thedesigning of grammar teaching activities, including the learning theories,teaching theories and the evaluating theories. Then the comparison andcontrast of the NSEC and Intermediate Matters are presented in theChapter Four, involving the purpose, the approach of the research, and thequantitative and qualitative analysis. Chapter Five draws a conclusion of thethesis based on the analysis, and put forward some suggestions on how todesign the effective grammar teaching activities and the limitations of theresearch.
