Study On The Population Carrying Capacity Of Chongming Island Base On Ecological Footprint

Population is the most important factor in achieving the goal of sustainable development, and it is to settle the issue of population that we carry the study on population carrying capacity. In this study, the Ecological Footprint was applied in the population carrying capacity research of Chongming Island for the first time. The population carrying capacity was calculated and compared according to the time-trend data from 1996 to 2004. The results showed that: (1)Although the population gross of Chongming Island was continuously declining, the population carrying capacity had declined more, and so that more pressure was loaded on the population; (2)The volume of Biological Capacity of Chongming Island was decreasing while the ecological footprint per person increasing, which directly resulted the decline of population carrying capacity, and the trend will go on. According to the results above, considering the actual population of Chongming Island, we gave some policy advice about population development strategy for the construction of Chongming Ecological Island. These effective measures include: (1)to improve the management of population and make the structure better; (2)to accelerate the "three-centralization" in villages and town construction; (3)to modify and optimize the industry structure and promote the agriculture-industrialization; (4)to follow the environmentalism while economy advanced; (5)to advocate the life style of resource-saved and environment-protected.
