Underachievement widely exists in elementary and middle schools. The phenonmenon attracks more attention in China Recently, and several subjects have involved in the study of the cause and transform of underachievement. These studies have provided the foundation for our reflection of the theory and our action in education practice. However, the study in China are mainly small-sample surveys and diagnoses with foreign test, the macroscopical analysis is also accepted at present. Although underachievement is one of the important problems for education, there are seldom researches of positivism from the view of teaching.The cause of underachievement can be concluded to students' personal characteristics and their environment for developing, which are also sources for diagnoses and transform. As one of the most important factors which influence students' development, school life may weaken or strengthen students' personal characteristics, therefore, it responsibles for underachievement to a great extent. And through describing, explaining and analyzing school life, we may approach the nature of underachievement.This study uses narrative approach to present a case about a fifth-grade underachiever in elementary school, and to seek the cause from the student's personal characteristics, the relationship between he and his teachers, and relationship between he and his classmates. The study also describe and analyze the diagnosing and transform practice of Chinese, math and English teachers, and put forward some advises for promoting the underachiever's performance in the case of populace of the big-class teaching system and the "test culture".
