| Listening comprehension has been a focus of teaching foreign language for many years in China. In addition, English is learnt mainly in class, so TEFL faces a great deal of difficulty. Thus it is necessary to create the environment of language learning to arouse the students' motivation. Multimedia breaks the traditional teaching models and changes the backward learning means. It is the research aim of the paper.The whole dissertation is divided into seven chapters. The first part of this paper describes the background and the significance of the study .The second part of the paper deals with the literature reviews of research on the effectiveness of multimedia for listening teaching. The third part of the paper deals with theory foundation of multimedia, the advantages of MCALL, the roles and characteristics of MCALL in relation to listening. The forth part of the paper, an experiment was conducted in a secondary vocational school in Xingjiang. Two nature classes, who entered the school in 2005.One was an experimental group, the other was a control group. The experimental group was assigned to using the new means and the new learning models while the control group using the traditional ones. A pre-test, given before the experiment showed no differences between the experimental group and the control group. Within a year's experiment, their performance was measured, which all indicated that the multimedia and the new learning models were more effective than the traditional ones for development of the students' abilities, a relevant experiment is designed in order to find out whether the multimedia in teaching English listening comprehension is more effective than the traditional listening teaching. And a survey is carried out to show students attitudes and opinions about the model of listening teaching under multimedia instruction. The fifth part of the paper collects the data and analysis. The application of multimedia to listening comprehension teaching in secondary vocational school can improve the students' English level .The sixth part of the paper is the results and discussion. In this part, the author reviews the major findings in the experiment, practical implications and the recommendation for future research. The seventh part of the paper is the thesis' conclusions.Multimedia English teaching is a relatively new concept and its application to the listening comprehension classes in secondary vocational school has been proved to be more effective than the traditional approach in promoting learners' listening comprehension ability, students' overall English level and learning interest can be facilitated and during the process of listening, The application of MELT to listening classes cultivates learners to use some related tools in finishing listening comprehension exercises. The study can help English teachers and learners understand how the multimedia influences English listening teaching and learning and then take corresponding countermeasures to solve the problems with English listening that have emerged in English listening teaching and learning process. |
