To learn a language involves learning pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary. Vocabulary plays a critical role of the three. Language is no meaning without vocabulary, and people can not communicate without it. So many researchers and educators have made great efforts on vocabulary learning, they have achieved much and developed vocabulary learning. They believe that vocabulary learning strategies are very important in learning vocabulary and should be paid much attention to. This thesis illustrates learning strategies and vocabulary learning strategies, and put forwards some strategies such as phonetic strategies and keyword method strategies, which are neglected but very important actually, and they are used in vocabulary teaching and learning. The subject in this study consists of two classes of ninth-grade students in junior middle school. By undertaking the questionnaire and vocabulary test, junior middle school students'vocabulary learning strategies status is understood. The result of the test shows that the vocabulary learning strategies are useful for vocabulary learning. The thesis suggests that many kinds of strategies should be recommended to students and the students'awareness of vocabulary learning strategies should be improved. The teachers should guide students to choose and use strategies which are suitable for them. In this way, students can enhance their vocabulary learning abilities.
