The Research And Practice On The Development Of Selected English Poetry Curriculum For Senior High School

English poetry, an essential part of English literature and the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings, is characterized by the following elements: a musical effect created by rhythm and sounds, a precise and fresh imagery, and multiple levels of the closer words and allusions. Learning English poetry can help students expand their knowledge of English and American culture, of all areas of human endeavor; to develop intellectual skills and abilities and a sensibility to English language; to expand their imagination; and to experience aesthetic pleasure. Poetry can also provide immense opportunities for personal growth, which is of particular relevance to adolescents. As the students stand within the imaginative world of poetry, they may be comforted to recognize the fact that their own experiences are not unique. They may also adopt new values and attitudes and discover alternative ways of behaving. Thus the learning of English poetry provides the opportunities for both intellectual and personal development.Based on the theory of humanism, the author argued that learning English poetry should form a central part of the selected English curriculum and it has a vital role to play in students' language experience, affecting not only their English skills, but the effectiveness of their personal development. This paper is an attempt to guide the Senior High School students, who have learned enough English, to learn and appreciate English poetry. It aims at developing a selected English poetry curriculum according to the requirement of the standard of Senior High School Curriculum, which has pointed out that Senior High School students should have the capacity to appreciate classic poems easy to read and understand and also emphasized that they should know the rhythm and rhyme of poetry.Selected curriculum, together with required curriculum, plays an important role in the curriculum reform, which aims at building an integrated system of language using capacities, including language skills, language points, affection and attitude,...
