The textbook, the resource of learning and teaching, used by students and teachers, is basically designed to attain teaching objectives. However, a wide range of published materials for English language teaching (ELT) available on the market makes selecting the right textbook a challenging task with the development of policy to diversity versions in textbooks and the promulgation and implementation of the new curriculum standards.This thesis is divided into five parts. The first chapter consists of five sections, in which the background, significance, methods, some terms and the structure of the thesis are covered. The second chapter is about the relevant research on the evaluation of English teaching materials, and criteria of the evaluation are put forward based on the research on teaching materials evaluation at home and abroad, influential checklist on English teaching materials evaluation and new curriculum standards. The third chapter is the analysis of the textbook New Century Senior English, which presents a comprehensive analysis concerning the guiding principles, the contents of the textbook, the structures of the book, quality of pictures and charts of the book, language contents, language skills, cultural consciousness, emotional attitude, study strategies and so on. The language contents deal with the analysis of phonetics, vocabulary, grammar, functions and topics, and the language skills include the analysis of listening, speaking, reading and writing. The fourth chapter provides the current use situation of New Century English based on the results of the investigation on teachers and students, and the analysis on the result of the investigation are made. The last chapter presents the conclusion of the thesis according to the analysis and investigation, and some suggestions on how to edit and teach the textbook are put forward.
