Textbooks, as an important teaching resource, play a significant role inschool education. In China, English textbooks carry the requirementsstipulated by the curriculum for senior middle school English education anddetermine English teaching content and teaching methods in senior middleschool education. English textbooks are a major resource for senior middleschool students to learn English and a major tool for teachers to organizeEnglish teaching process. Since the introduction of the New Standard ofEnglish Curriculum which raises new concept and new demand for the basicEnglish education, series of English teaching materials and textbooks havebeen recompiled under the principle of New English Curriculum.Based on the studies of English textbook evaluation at home and abroadand combined with the needs of current senior middle school English teachingenvironment, this paper will use the methods of literature and questionnaire tomake a systematic and scientific evaluation of New Senior English for China,textbooks published by People’s Education Press.The research questions in this study are listed as follows:1. Does NewSenior English for China meet the requirements stipulated by New EnglishCurriculum for Chinese Senior Middle Schools?2. Does New Senior Englishfor China meet the actual needs of senior middle school students and teachers?3. What are strengths and weaknesses of New Senior English for China?Which parts need to be improved? How to make the most of the textbooks?Literature and questionnaire are used in this study. Cheng Xiaotang’ssystematic evaluation of teaching materials, especially internal and externalevaluation, is the major approaches. Questionnaires are major instrument inthis study. The questionnaires, including a teacher questionnaire and a studentquestionnaire, are adapted and adjusted from questionnaires designed byGrant. Students and teachers involved in this survey come from a key senior middle school in Hohhot. The questionnaire data are analyzed. The effectivepercentage and frequency of options are used to calculate the proportion.From the analysis and evaluation, Book5meets the requirements in newCurriculum Standards, students’ and teachers’ needs, and the examinations.But there are some shortcomings which demand teachers to make someadjustment when teaching.
