The purpose of this study was to investigate the developmental characteristics in children's pattern and seriation, gender difference, and the relationship between the development of children's pattern and seriation, and compare the children from urban and rural area. A sample of 60 children aged 4-5 from Gansu province participated in the study(ageM: 52.9, SD: 3.7). Descriptive statistics and MANVOA were used to analyse the characteristic of children's development of pattern and seriation, the gender difference and the difference between the children from urban and rural area. Correlation analysis was used to examime the relationship among children's pattern abilities, seriation development and cardinal number concept. The implication of the study are also discussed. The result indicated that the children aged 4 to 5 years had developed initial ability in pattern and seriation, but the level was low. No significant difference was found between the children from urban and rural area in terms of the development in pattern and seriation and cardinal number concept development. However, gender difference was found in the task of pattern replication and seriation of length (paper stick seriation). Significant positive correlation emerged between children's performances in cardinal concept and pattern, between children's performances in number concept and seriation. But the correlation between children's performances in pattern and seriation was not significant.
