Yan Yuan was a famous pragmatic educator and thinker of the early Qing Dynasty , he was the founder of Yan-Li school. He devoted to educational theory and educational practice all his life, and he established his characteristic ideology by developing the good and discarding the bad of traditional education, including educational goal of "Genuine talent and Solid morality", educational content of "Practical composition, Implementation, Entity and Practical utility" and educational method of "Practice and Implements". Yan Yuan linked tradition and realism closely, he also pioneered a useful educational way that deal with concrete matters relating to work, holding the important status of thought and education in Chinese ancient times.The paper consists of five parts. The preface includes the reason of selecting this subject, the present researches and the main objects of the thesis. The second part mainly discusses the social background and thought origin of Yan Yuan's educational thought of pragmatism. The third part elaborates Yan Yuan's educational practice by his educational profession. The fourth part elaborates and appraises Yan Yuan's educational observes by his educational philosophy, educational goal, educational content and educational method. The last part is the summary of the paper.
