The environmental education has been paid attention to by many countries and has become a very important subject in the field of education with the economic development, the social progress and the appearance of environmental problems. However, how to promote the environmental education effectively has not been decided yet. Every country is searching for the effective way. In the process of searching, it is very important to draw references from other countries' successful experience. Our country should also do same project. The development and rich experience have been attained in the field of university environmental education during the past 20 years, however, various defects resulted from various facts exist. The recent reform in the higher education of our country provides a chance for the development of environmental education. At the mention of university environmental education in Japan, not only the practical field but also the theory ranks among the first in the world and many successful measures merit our attention.Therefore, the comparative research of the university environmental education between China and Japan is addressed in this paper. The paper consists of five parts: in the first one the research subject and the reason why choose it as subject would be shown; the second one would review the history of environmental education in China and Japan and show the expectation to promote the university environmental education in our country; in the third one, the comparison and analysis on the development, object, course, method and evaluation system of undergraduate and postgraduate students' environmental education in China and Japan in three periods(1980s,1990s,after the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development) would be addressed, and this analysis would use full and accurate data; in the forth one, the author would elaborate the features and the defects of environmental education in universities of Japan in order to show the necessity and the importance of the reform of university environmental education in China clearly and indifferently and to get the reform thoughts straight and to adhere to the correct orientation; in the last part, some practical advices on the reform and development of university environmental education in our country would be provided.
