College evaluations and rankings by social organizations has become a new way of higher education assessment in many countries of the world, and also a kind of method of the society to supervise and accelerate the development of colleges. This new trend has aroused a widespread concern. Many famous rankings overseas are held by social organizations and have great public praise in their countries and abroad. In our country, Guangdong Scientific Management Institute began the first college's social rankings in 1993, and some other social organizations started working on college evaluations later on. These organizations use lots of detailed material to evaluate colleges, and introduce their evaluations and rankings to the public, and the activities now have been a focus in our society.As an important part of higher education assessment, colleges' social evaluations has great significance in meeting different kinds of people's needs, ensuring higher education quality, furthering mutual understanding between the public and colleges, accelerating competitions between colleges. There are many problems going with evaluations while it is developing fast. These problems have influenced their credits in the public. This thesis will make a full deep study on this issue, hope to improve the evaluations of colleges, and help to enrich the study of theories and practical work.This thesis consists of five parts. The first part is an introduction. It includes the background of this study, a simple introduction of social college evaluations and rankings in both internal and external countries, and significance of this thesis. Part Two is about the development of social college evaluations and rankings in our country. Firstly, the paper traces back to the initiatives of social evaluations and rankings, points out the foundation and importance of evaluations that carried out by social organizations. Secondly, the paper tries to make a clear statement about the development of three famous social organizations which are working on college evaluations and rankings. Part Three analyzes the problems shown in these social college evaluations, and finds out the basic reasons of these problems. Part Four provides some suggestions according to these problems, hopes to be helpful to solve the problems and perfect the college's social evaluations and rankings in our country. The last part is a summary of the thesis.
