Assessment is more than simply giving marks or grades, although that may well be a part of it. And because it involves making a judgment it will almost always inevitably include an element of subjectivity by the assessor. However, we should try to make assessment as objective, fair and transparent as possible. It's no doubt that scientific and effective teaching assessment is the important means by which people can check whether the aim is well realized.The situation of assessment here in china is that, up to now , we have already assessed our students mainly by testing them. But people have found that this approach is not scientific. The flexible global movement of people and capital has influenced China with more people becoming globally aware. We will learn quickly and adapt to make assessment more humanistic and learner-centred .The reform of the curriculum innovation aims at fostering their innovative spirit and practical ability, forming the effective study strategies and establishing the basis for their sustainable development, which is not merely the logical jumping-off of English teaching and quality standard but also its eternal end-result. So a successful teaching has to help students get ready for their meaningful life in the future, use what they've learned in the real world (David Lazear, 2000, p27).But it does have a long way for us to put the new curriculum innovation into play. After all, China has the world's largest education system. Since there are millions of examinees in university entrance examination (7.23 million in China), this examination becomes important and attracts attention from the whole of the Chinese society.So, as English teachers who are working for Junior High School, we must recognize the function of assessment and study to find better ways to assess our students. And, it can be argued. Well, What is teaching assessment? Are there any assessment approaches fit for our junior high school English teaching better and how do they work? Now, I'll dissertate assessment application and approaches study in Chinese Junior High School English Teaching from the definition of assessment, current reforms in assessment and practical problems and some other aspects.
