Nowadays, people pay more and more attention to students' participation in English classroom teaching. However, the traditional English teaching models in which students are completely dominated by teacher-centered, grammar-translation methods are still very popular, especially in senior high school. Students in senior high school still have got few opportunities (or they are not willing) to take an active part in English classroom teaching activities. They are not able to express themselves correctly and freely. This teaching method can no longer meet the needs for development. Teaching is a two-way operation. Without students'participation, language teaching can't be effective. More and more researchers and practitioners and teachers have realized the importance of it in language teaching. At present in China, English teachers are called upon to reform the traditional way of teacher-centered teaching ,and more and more importance has been attached to the process of classroom teaching and the study of classroom interaction has become more significant. This study is intended in an attempt to create interaction patterns and apply these patterns into the English teaching of senior middle school, enhance the students'interest and motivation of learning English and improve the students'language communicative competence and overall language abilities by using interaction patterns, The purpose of this thesis is to explore the problems of the current situations of English teaching and learning and possible solutions to the problem. In the present study, different theoretical approaches to language acquisition are reviewed first, which can be divided into three categories (Ellis, 1994), i.e. the behaviorist approach, the nativist approach and the interactionist approach. As Krashen's theory is of great importance to second language acquisition, it is also discussed in addition. These approaches have different views on the linguistic environment and the leaner's internal processing mechanism. The behaviorist approach emphasizes the external factors一the linguistic environment, whereas the nativist approach stresses the internal factors一the innate knowledge or mechanism. And the interactionist view sees language development as the result both of the environment and innate mechanism. The differences shed great light on the role of interaction in second language acquisition and learning from different angles. Studies showed that interaction contributes considerably to language acquisition and learning, but in terms of input, output and negotiation, which is more important to be emphasized; the environment, the innate mechanism or the interplay of the two requires more inquiry. For the present study, it is more favorable to take the interactionist perspective as framework to examine and analyze interaction in second language acquisition and learning. This thesis explores the concept of interaction, its theoretical basis and the principles to be followed of designing interaction activities. The principles were conducted on the basis of theories of Brown,H, Douglas and other linguistic theories.Advantages of classroom interaction are discussed. It can activate their intrinsic motivation, enhance students'comprehension of English and improve their communicative competence and performancesThis thesis explains three principal interaction patterns. They are teacher-student interaction, student-student interaction and human-computer interaction. In the course of interaction, both teachers and students are in an active state, students are real masters of learning. The interaction patterns help to motivate students'independence and stimulate their activeness and creativeness. In order to quicken teaching effectiveness and elicit students'interest, multimedia software and internet should be used.Different kinds of interaction patterns adopted in English teaching class are also discussed. They are mainly applied into middle school English teaching class according to different students, learning contents and tasks. Thus students'motivation, discrete language points and communicative competence are improved and developed.Besides, this thesis also makes some research on the current situation of classroom interaction in senior English Teaching It points out some factors that may exert negative influence on classroom interaction and provides some suggestions on improving them.
