The 21st Century is a century of international competition, a critical period, in which China is striving to build a moderately prosperous society in all aspects, to practice a scientific outlook on development, to build a harmonious society, to basically realize modernization. The accomplishment of the above targets must be ensured by a steady supply of talents.Postgraduate education, as a form of high-level institutional education, has supplied large numbers of qualified graduates to various fields of the country. Postgraduate physical education, an indispensable part of postgraduate education, is a guarantee to encourage the postgraduate students to take part in physical exercise thus to enhance their health condition, and to turn out sturdy builders and successors for the socialist cause. It is also a guarantee for the postgraduate's own growth and development. But in view of the present situation, physical education for postgraduate students is slow and leaves much to be desired.A big number of scholars are trying to explore workable and effective ways for the physical education of postgraduate students and many agree that to offer physical training courses is an important channel. Jilin province abounds in institutions of higher learning, but lags behind in construction of postgraduate physical education system, without adequate offer of physical education courses. This situation will definitely affect the quality of postgraduate education.By way of literature data analysis, questionnaire distribution, statistical analysis, interview with experts and field investigation, this thesis is designed to study the feasibility of opening physical education courses to the postgraduate students in Jilin Province. With a combination of qualitative and quantitative approaches, the thesis aims to discuss the following problems: 1. to find out the facts about postgraduate student's participation in physical exercise in Jilin Province, 2. to find out the health condition of postgraduate students in Jilin Province, 3. to analyze the relevance between level of postgraduate students'physical exercise and self-awareness about health, 4. examine the necessity and feasibility of offering physical education courses to the postgraduate students in Jilin Province. The conclusion of the research is: the ratio of physical exercise participants among postgraduate students in Jilin Province is lower than the average of 31.4% for the national population. Their daily exercise time length is shorter than an hour, or 300 minutes a week as prescribed by the Ministry of Education. The postgraduate students in universities and colleges in Jilin Province apparently lack in physical exercise. The ratio of poor self-awareness of health is rather high, with many students suffering from chronicle illnesses, or working under great pressure in their daily lives. Relevant analysis reveals that the level of postgraduate's participation in physical exercise is in direct proportion to their self-awareness of health; the postgraduate students are enthusiastic about the opening of physical education courses. The institutions of higher learning in Jilin Province are in possession of theoretical knowledge and material supply, thus feasible to open physical education courses for the postgraduate students.Finally, the thesis puts forward suggestions for the postgraduate physical education in the institutions of higher learning of Jilin Province: 1. to establish the idea that"health is of utmost importance", 2. to routinize and standardize postgraduate physical education, 3. to offer physical education courses to postgraduate students, 4. reinforce the construction of postgraduate physical education syllabus, 5. to combine in-class and after-class physical education for the postgraduate students.
