With the economic and social development, the communication between China and the outside world is increasing frequently. People have more opportunities to contact foreign cultures. Culture teaching is playing an important role in foreign language education. Cross-cultural awareness or cultural awareness is prescribed in the New English Curricular Standard (NECS) for the first time, so cross-cultural communicative competence is put forward to be the ultimate goal of foreign language teaching (FLT) in China.However, For a long time, Middle School teaching has accepted and practiced the teaching method which was based on the theory of structuralism. It emphasized the cognition in the structure.Knowledge such as vocabulary, phrases, grammatical rules and so on is paid too much attention to. While the cultural background of the target language is ignored. As a result, the students who have learned English for many years often made mistakes in the communication because of the lack of comprehending culture differences between two languages. With the development of reformation of English teaching, the culture teaching and the cultivation of cultural awareness has been drawn much attention to.Cultivating students' cultural awareness is the goal of culture teaching, and cultural knowledge is the base of the cultivation of cultural awareness, that is, cultural awareness is gradually cultivated in learning and absorbing cultural knowledge, which then paves the way for culture understanding. Effective teacher-student interaction in English teaching not only helps teachers to finish the classroom instruction high effectively and increases the appeal of English teaching, but also helps students to absorb English knowledge and cultivates the ability to use English actually. So this thesis aims at exploring the effective approaches of culture teaching in middle school English teaching,while in the process of culture teaching,integrate culture teaching and interactive activities based on culture to cultivate students'cultural awareness.This thesis first introduces the relative theories which helps to understand the interactive English teaching and culture teaching on a theoretical level, then it gives the concept of culture, cultural awareness, importance of culture teaching and cultivating cultural awareness in middle school. On a practical Level, it focuses on exploring several effective methods in practical teaching, such as, to teach target culture through reading, vocabulary and grammar teaching; To cultivate cultural awareness through culture-featured interactive activities;supply cultural background knowledge; Compare cultural differences in interactive classroom; and holding interactive culture lectures etc. These approaches will not only arouse students' interest in English study, what's more, it will cultivate students' cross-culture awareness,enhance the understanding to the target culture,so as to enhance their cross-culture communicative competence,to realize the ultimate goal of foreign language teaching.
