Education is not merely learning. In order to be of value, a learning experience should contribute to a person's whole education as well as to their learning of an aspect of the knowledge. Since the mid 80s, language instruction has shifted form an emphasis on teacher-centered to learner-centered classrooms and from transmission-oriented to participator or constructivist knowledge development. It affords learners the opportunity to develop a range of cognitive, social as well as linguistic skills while interacting and negotiating in the classroom. This kind of teaching allowed the teacher not only to be a lecturer but an organizer, a designer, an instructor and a facilitator. In a word, a teacher should play as a mediator to serve the students, to teach them how to learn.Using language to learn and learning to use language are the main contents of teaching in language classroom. The ability to communicate effectively in English is now a well-established goal in ELT. The role of a mediator refers to use tool like mediation language, emotions and anything can help learners improve their ability through effective communicative activities in classrooms.This essay mainly discusses how teachers play mediation role to make effective communicative activities.The first chapter is introduction. It mainly introduces the present situation of English teaching in china and the existing problem. This thesis aims at illustrating the teachers'role as mediators make classroom communicative activities more effective.The second chapter is theoretical basis. This chapter will present the theoretical basis of the teachers'role as mediators and the communicative approach. These theories will be helpful to understand the issues in the present context of the study.The third chapter introduces the experiments. The questionnaire on the teachers'role, the interview and the learning achievements were presented. The findings of the study suggest that the proper role of the teacher in classroom activities can improve students'language abilities.In the fourth chapter, some suggestions on how teachers should act to make the classroom activities effective will be stated from three aspects in this section.The last chapter is conclusion. It emphasizes the implications, the limitation of the research and gives some advice for the future research in this field.
