CALL (Computer Aided Language Learning) is being greatly challenged due to the rapid development of the information technology, especially the computer science and the Internet.The English teachers'perceptions and their practical competence of CALL use in vocational schools will influence the effectiveness and efficiency of CALL innovations in foreign language education. The paper, based on a survey study of 112 English teachers from 13 vocational schools in the city of Chengde focuses on the teachers'practical competence; their urgency and confidence; and the factors effecting their initiatives and their real needs in training concerned.The research finds that,a) most English teachers in vocational school are holding a positive attitude towards CALL innovation in the new situations, and they are confident enough to encounter the challenges;b) as for the practical competence in CALL use, the teachers still stay at the basic level of applications(such as word processing, course ware developing or online information locating), and most teachers have not ever tried the latest or the comparatively complex techniques like web blogs and homepage releasing;c) Teachers have their own practical demands concerning training but they are not generally satisfied with training efficiency so far.What is implied from the research is that;1) Schools and the agencies concerned should take practical measures to convey the teachers'positive attitudes into teaching actions to use and innovate the new technologies;2) Teachers'real needs, both psychologically and technically, ought to be taken into consideration while hard wares and soft wares being invested in.
