In recent years, in foreign language teaching, the teaching focus has been shifted fromhow to teach perfectly to how to learn successfully. Many domestic and foreign researchershave turned their attention to the individual characteristics and differences of languagelearners. Learning strategies have drawn many researchers’ attention and have achievedfruitful results. However, research on language learning strategies in China is still in the initialstage, which almost all the subjects are English majors in colleges and universities. Researchon English learning strategy is relatively less in higher vocational colleges, especiallynon-English majors. At present, the number of students in the higher vocational education hasmore than half of students attending the national higher education in our country. Therefore, itseems necessary and reasonable to take a survey about the vocational students.Meanwhile, with the rapid development of computer technology in the past decades, itopens up a way to CALL (Computer-Assisted Language Learning), which can be regarded asthe search for and study of the computer assistance in language teaching and learning. On thebasis of previous studies, this paper mainly studies whether in CALL environment canimprove the application of English learning strategies of higher vocational students.Research is to be carried out, focusing on the following three questions:1. Which category of English learning strategies do Vocational college students apply inEnglish learning, especially the successful learners? How is frequency of use?2. What are the relationship between learning strategies and academic achievement?3. Can the students apply English learning strategies effectively in CALL?In this paper, this is a mixed study, and two instruments were adopted to collect thequantitative and qualitative data and information. All the subjects are non-English majors from Yellow River Conservancy Technical Institute.141people completed questionnaires. The collected data was processed and analyzed with SPSS13.0.The results show that: the frequency of overall strategy apply of no-English Majors ofvocational college students is not high, but there is a positive correlation between learningstrategies and English achievement; In CALL environment, the learners are more inclined touse meta-cognitive strategies, memory strategies and affective strategies, whichmeta-cognitive strategy is the best predicting power; CALL can enhance the frequency oflearning strategies use of students in a certain extent. This study can extend the research onthe English learning strategies to some extent, and raise the awareness of learning strategiesof the students and English teachers. Based on the findings, this paper puts forward somesuggestions on higher vocational college English teaching in CALL environment. Especiallythe teacher should integrate the advantages of CALL with English learning strategy trainingso as to help students adopt the appropriate English learning strategies to improve theirEnglish proficiency.
