CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning) is a new research focus during the reform of English teaching. CALL emphasizes that students can learn language by using computers, the purpose of which is to obtain the best learning efficiency by combining teaching process, teaching contents, and computer assisting. At present, CALL research has received considerable attention, and the relevant research findings are very abundant. But most of the research is aimed at English teaching in colleges and universities. The studies about English reading teaching through computer in Junior High School are still rare in China.English reading as an important part of language skills and the main steps of language input, enjoys an important position in English teaching. Students’ reading comprehension in junior high school is far from satisfaction even if many teachers put more time and effort on reading. And most students lack interests in reading because of the traditional teaching model. So it’s very urgent and necessary to improve the current English reading teaching model in Junior High school so as to improve the teaching effect and arouse students’ interests and attitude towards learning English.For the reasons above, the author planned to study "On the Application of CALL to Teaching English Reading in Junior High School ", which is aimed to search for a new method to English reading by applying CALL.In this thesis the author firstly analyze the students’ obstacles in English reading and then introduces the feasibility and application of CALL in English reading. After that, the author gives the theoretical basis of CALL.In practice, the author did an experiment with the experimental class. The experiment lasted for eighteen weeks:the data were mainly from the following instruments ---two questionnaires (before and after the experiment), interviews and pre- and post- tests. The conclusion shows that some aspects of the students’ reading ability in experimental class had been improved and their interests in learning English had also been aroused because of the application of CALL. To compare with the experimental class, the author used the same teaching contents and schedule in controlled class. However, after the study is finished, their reading scores are lower than the students in experimental class in terms of interactive questions. Finally the author also gave some implications and suggestions for English teachers to improve reading teaching through CALL. First, educational administrative department should introduce more teaching platform and teaching software, and the school should pay full attention to the reform of English teaching model and also give certain financial and material support to reduce the burden of the teacher. Second, teachers should strengthen the task-based teaching and prepare the whole module content together with complete tasks, and make the corresponding evaluation and give them effective guidance, so the students can’t access websites freely and their learning efficiency will be improved. At the same time, teachers should highlight the language points of the traditional teaching model, arouse students’ learning enthusiasm fully and pay more attention to the implementation of the language knowledge to improve the English reading ability.
