Students'internal factors, especially controllable factors, such as: motivation, individual effort, learning strategies, affective factors, etc. will determine their final achievements. But learning motivation may be a prerequisite in a student's study. After all, the student himself is the principal part of his study. He must be devoted to learning and take pleasure in learning. Only in this way can he make good achievements.Therefore, in English teaching, it's of great significance for English teachers to find out and inspire students' learning motivation. This thesis is just intended to explore the role that motivation plays in English learning among vocational school students. The writer of the thesis thinks that learning motivation plays a very important role in the process of their acquiring English. In this thesis, the writer elaborates on the basic aspects of learning motivation and some relevant theories, and takes these theories as guidelines to analyze the present English study situation and the learning motivation of the vocational school students, especially the reason why some of them are idle or disgusted with English learning,etc. The writer, with years of her practice, attempts to do some research and solve these problems in the light of education psychology and the principles of second language acquisition. The writer concludes that the urgent task in the vocational school students'English study is to enhance and keep up their learning motivation, to develop their interest and strategies in English learning and to guide them to have right study attitudes to it. Finally the writer also puts forward her own opinions and countermeasures on how to stir up the vocational school students' English learning motivation and foster their learning strategies, etc. so as to promote the teaching and learning in English classes, and tries to explore a new English teaching mode with the characteristics of vocational education.
